MagicPak Replacement, Installation & Repair

A MagicPak is an all-in-one, through-the-wall HVAC unit: the furnace, air conditioner and blower share one cabinet, usually inside a closet on an exterior wall of a condo, apartment or townhome. Most of these units last 15 to 20 years, and many in Southeast Michigan are now at the end of that run. Our team replaces and installs these all-in-one heating and cooling units across Genesee, Lapeer and Oakland counties, and handles repairs on units with life left in them.

MagicPak Replacement in Davison and Genesee County

Replacing a through-the-wall unit comes with limits a standard furnace swap never has. The new unit must fit the existing wall sleeve and exterior louver, connect to the ductwork already inside your walls, and match the gas or electric service your unit was built around. MagicPak designs its V-Series to the original cabinet dimensions so it drops into most existing openings. Its M-Series uses a smaller louver for buildings that want a different look on the outside wall.

It is usually time to replace when:

  • The unit is 15 years old or more and the repair calls are getting more frequent.
  • The compressor has failed, or the cooling side has a refrigerant leak on an older unit.
  • A gas model has a cracked heat exchanger, which can leak carbon monoxide and should not be patched.
  • The data plate lists R-22 refrigerant, which is no longer produced in the United States.
  • Energy bills keep climbing while comfort keeps dropping.

MagicPak Installation for Condos and Townhomes Across Southeast Michigan

A proper installation starts well before the old unit comes out of the closet. Every MagicPak installation from our team follows the same steps:

  1. Measure: We measure the wall sleeve, louver and closet so the new unit fits without cutting into the building.
  2. Match: We confirm the configuration your building supports: gas heat with electric cooling, all-electric, or a heat pump with electric backup heat.
  3. Size: We match cooling capacity to your space. MagicPak units range from three-quarters of a ton to three tons.
  4. Check code: We inspect venting, the gas line and electrical capacity against current code and pull the mechanical permit required for equipment replacement in Michigan.
  5. Install and test: We remove the old unit, set the new one, connect it to your ductwork and thermostat, and test heating and cooling before we leave.

Floor savers and hall runners go down on every job, which matters in shared hallways and finished condo floors. If the gas line feeding the unit needs work, our gas line services are handled by the same company. A new unit is also a good time to upgrade the thermostat through our smart thermostat installation service.

Gas, Electric or Heat Pump: Choosing Your All-in-One Replacement

MagicPak builds three basic configurations, and the right replacement usually follows what your building already has.

  • Gas heat with electric cooling: The most common setup in buildings with gas service. Current gas models reach up to 95% AFUE.
  • All-electric: Electric resistance heat paired with air conditioning, common in buildings without gas lines.
  • Heat pump: Heats and cools with the same refrigerant system, with 3 to 10 kW of electric backup heat for the coldest Michigan nights. Learn more about heat pump service.

In industry terms, a MagicPak is a single packaged vertical unit, which is why parts and replacements are specific to this style of equipment. Switching fuel types is possible in some buildings, but it can require association approval and electrical upgrades. Current MagicPak production uses R-454B, a lower-impact refrigerant, so a replacement also moves you off older refrigerants that are getting harder and more expensive to service.

MagicPak Repair When Replacement Can Wait

Not every breakdown means a new unit. When a younger MagicPak fails, the cause is usually a blower motor or capacitor, an igniter or flame sensor on a gas model, a heat element on an electric model, a control board, or a clogged condensate drain. A technician finds the failed part, works from the model and serial number on the data plate, and gives you the price before any work starts. If the problem is a heating failure, see our furnace repair page for what a visit includes.

You get the repair price and the replacement price side by side, and the price we quote is the price you pay. Under our No Surprises Guarantee, if extra work is needed to finish the agreed scope, we cover that cost.

Keeping Your New MagicPak Running

A yearly tune-up protects the investment: heat exchanger inspection on gas models, coil cleaning, a drain flush and a clear exterior louver. Members of the Davison Home Care Club get priority scheduling and an annual full HVAC service health check. Our furnace maintenance page covers what a heating tune-up includes.

MagicPak FAQs

What is a MagicPak?

MagicPak is a brand of all-in-one, through-the-wall HVAC unit made by Allied Air Enterprises, a Lennox International company. Heating, cooling and the blower share one cabinet that vents through a louver in the exterior wall, so each condo or apartment has its own system without a rooftop or ground-level condenser.

Is a MagicPak the same as a packaged HVAC unit?

They are close relatives. Each puts heating and cooling in one cabinet, but most packaged HVAC units sit outside on a slab or rooftop and duct air into the home. A MagicPak installs inside the condo, in a closet against an exterior wall, and breathes through a louver. That difference is why a through-the-wall replacement has to match the existing wall sleeve rather than a pad or roof curb.

How long does a MagicPak last?

Most units last 15 to 20 years. Annual maintenance, clean filters and a clear exterior louver push a unit toward the longer end of that range.

Will a new MagicPak fit my existing wall opening?

In most cases, yes. The V-Series is built to the original MagicPak dimensions as a replacement unit. We measure the wall sleeve, louver and closet before quoting so there are no surprises on installation day.

What size MagicPak do I need?

MagicPak units run from three-quarters of a ton to three tons of cooling. The right size depends on your square footage, windows, exposure and the existing opening, so we confirm it on site rather than guessing from the old unit’s label.

Do I need condo association approval to replace my MagicPak?

Often, yes. Michigan condominiums are governed by a master deed and bylaws, and many associations regulate exterior louvers, equipment changes and contractor access to common areas. Check with your association before scheduling, and we can supply equipment specs for the board to review.

Can I replace a gas MagicPak with a heat pump model?

Sometimes. It depends on your electrical capacity and your association’s rules. MagicPak heat pump models include electric backup heat for Michigan winters, and a technician can tell you on site whether your unit is a candidate. Learn more about heat pumps.

Is it worth repairing an older MagicPak that uses R-22?

For small electrical or ignition repairs, sometimes. For a refrigerant leak or compressor failure, replacement is usually the better spend, because R-22 is no longer produced and what remains is costly.

Can I finance a MagicPak replacement?

Yes. We offer financing through GoodLeap, Service Finance and Michigan Saves, a statewide low-interest program for energy-efficient upgrades. Details are on our financing options page.

Do you charge extra for nights or weekends?

No. We are open 24/7 and do not add an extra charge for weekend or after-hours jobs.
